Message from Rebirth of Freedom Project Founder Cleo Pruitt:

The Rebirth of Freedom mission is to install a memorial in the National Soldiers Home Historic District, Milwaukee, on the VA Medical Center grounds.  It is to honor and raise awareness of the untold stories of service to our nation by African American and other military personnel of color, as well as the post-war needs of all veterans and their families.

The Soldiers Home is one of three original branches of the National Home for Disabled Volunteer Soldiers, which President Abraham Lincoln made provision for by signing Soldiers Home legislation, March 3, 1865.  Following the war African Americans lived in the village at the Milwaukee Soldiers Home. The U.S. 9th and 10th Cavalry, “Buffalo Soldiers,” who served following the war to settle the west are among the 37,000 buried at Wood National Cemetery, Milwaukee.

The Rebirth of Freedom objectives are to:

  • honor and celebrate the lives and legacy of our brave servicemen and women of color
  • bring awareness to the historic significance of the Soldiers Home District, Milwaukee
  • bring attention to the needs of all veterans, their children and descendants
  • inspire the revitalization of the Milwaukee Veterans Affairs facilities and grounds

Creating a national monument of this magnitude at this critical point in our nation’s history, could have significant impact on how these brave men and women are regarded nationally and abroad.  It will also be an honor to our city, county and state to be the home of this heartfelt recognition from a grateful nation.  To be able to honor and celebrate these American heroes in this way is a once in a lifetime opportunity for us all.
